Why I Chose This Artifact: Refuting an Opposing Argument
In the same essay I leter refute possible arguments against Pipher's book Writing to Change the World. Refuting and conceding are important parts of an argumentative essay and show the reader that you have considered their point of view. In considering opposing viewpoints I am showing my knowledge of the subject and building raport with my readers. I chose the refuting viewpoint that some people might not find Pipher's book helpful because it is based on many psychological observations and not a conventional textbook on writing. To refute this argument I had to find a source who had knowledge in the subject of reviewing books. One source that I found was a book reviever named Mary Ann More whom specialises in reviewing women activist text. Please find my argument in the text below.
SLO 1: Write cogent, well-devoloped arguments that clearly articulate a thesis supported by textual evidence.
My understanding:
I should be able to use sources to argue a well thought out point and make sure my paragraphs are always supporting my initial point in my essay.

Why I Chose This Artifact: Opening Paragraph From My Argumentative Essay
Below you will find the opening paragraph for my argumentative essay from week four of our English course. I clearly state my thesis in the paragraph which is that I believe Mary Pipher's book Writing to Change the World is helpful for writers experiencing writers block (blue highlight). I then state the criteria that I will use to support my argument to let the reader know that I will be discussing exactely HOW Pipher's book helps cure the block (yellow highlight). Writing A good thesis is something that I have learned by trial and error. The samples of "Draft Thesis" and "Revised Thesis" from A Writer's Reference by Diana Hacker helped a lot to improve my own revision in thesis writing.
